Italy, Meloni with an "iron fist" against illegal immigration, new legal package approved

The cabinet of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni today approved a new package of measures aimed at combating illegal immigration.
The package includes new powers that will enable authorities to impose a naval blockade in certain situations.
The package will enable authorities to prohibit passage into Italian territorial waters for up to 30 days, and extend it to a maximum of six months, in cases of serious threats to public order or national security, such as the concrete risk of terrorist acts or terrorist infiltration.
It will also be possible to impose a blockade in the event of "exceptional migratory pressure that could jeopardize the secure management of borders."
In such cases, apprehended migrants may be "transported to third countries other than their country of origin, with which Italy has concluded specific agreements".
The cabinet also approved a bill to implement the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which enters into force in June.
The package comes after the European Parliament approved on Tuesday a new list of safe countries to return migrants, even when they do not come from them, as well as offshore processing centers like the one in Rome in Albania, a potential model for other countries, which has however so far been largely thwarted by human rights court rulings.
"The centers in Albania will function," the Italian prime minister has repeatedly stated, hailing it as a pioneering deterrent to migration from Africa.
