Israel confirms figures: Over 70,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023 in

The Israeli military has admitted for the first time that figures published by health authorities in Gaza on the number of casualties are "broadly accurate", marking a significant change in position after years of objections to these data.

According to a senior Israeli security official, around 70,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks since October 2023, not including missing persons. Meanwhile, health authorities in Gaza report over 71,600 casualties and at least 10,000 people are believed to still be under the rubble.

Until now, Israel had mostly released figures for the militants it claimed to have eliminated. The Israeli military has said that around 22,000 of those killed were Hamas fighters, meaning the vast majority of the victims were civilians.

This admission has reopened the international debate on the humanitarian consequences of the war and accusations of violations of international humanitarian law by Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have announced that they will reopen the Rafah border crossing with Egypt to pedestrians, under European Union supervision. The move will allow some Palestinians to return to the Gaza Strip for the first time since the start of the war.
