Aggressiveness of the flu/ Over 100 cases per day at the QSUT, bronchopneumonia

The aggressiveness of this season's flu has increased emergencies and hospitalizations. The end of January marked the peak of flu circulation, but also infections in the population. Over 100 cases per day are referred to the infectious disease service at the QSUT with complications caused mainly by AH3N2i and other circulating subtypes.

Doctors say that 40% of those affected who go to the infectious disease emergency room are hospitalized due to bronchopneumonia and other complications.

"Bronchopneumonias are currently our main concern. These are patients who absolutely require special care. These are patients who often require hospitalization regardless of their age groups. From young to elderly people and who, as I said, require special care in an attempt to prevent complications," says Migena Qato, an infectious disease physician.

"There are subjects who present themselves more than once to the emergency room, initially attempting to receive outpatient treatment and then returning because we see that the result we wanted them to have was not achieved. At least 30-40% of them are cases that attract attention for hospitalization from the first moment."

Doctors say that cases that are referred to the infectious disease service come from all age groups. While the chronically ill and the elderly need hospitalization, due to the overlapping of diseases and problems caused by the flu. In the pediatric emergency department, the flow of visits during this peak period of flu circulation is even higher.

Doctors say that it is not always an emergency, as even for a high fever that lasts for several days, parents go to the hospital and not to health centers. Hospital visits, pediatricians say, without the recommendation of a family doctor, not only burden the health system, but also cause children to catch other viruses.

In addition to influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and other viruses are also circulating among children, while measles cases have returned due to reduced vaccination, especially in Tirana.

February is also expected to start with an increase in the curve of infections from flu and other viruses, so doctors are calling for caution, especially for children and the elderly./A2
