Lumir Abdixhiku submits resignation from LDK leadership

The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, has offered his resignation to the party's Assembly and asked it to consider it in the proceedings it is holding on Saturday.

"What do you want to do with me as chairman, and the future of this party? Whatever decision you make, I will calmly respect," he told party delegates.

Abdixhiku has summoned the Assembly following the results of the early parliamentary elections of December 28.

In this electoral process, the LDK won 13.24 percent of the vote – the second worst result since the post-war period.

" The result that brought us here did not come from a single mistake, nor from a single night, nor from a single decision. It came slowly, like accumulation, like a weight that gets heavier every day until one day you realize that you can no longer hold it ," Abdixhiku said at the start of the Assembly's proceedings.

Several party figures have called for his irrevocable resignation.

Among them is Hykmete Bajrami, who has irrevocably resigned from the position of party vice president and has requested the same from Abdixhiku.

" I have chosen to come before you, not because it is easy for me, but because I feel it is necessary, because I have always believed that a person is not measured when everything goes well, but when he has to speak even when his words tremble," Abdixhiku said, among other things, during his speech.

He said earlier on Saturday that the Assembly is the highest body of the party and therefore it decides on everything.

"I assure all LDK members that from this debate we will emerge even more unified, even stronger, and more prepared for the better future that awaits us. With a majority of votes, we determine our political destiny . "

According to the agenda published by the party, after Abdixhiku's speech, the Assembly will hold discussions behind closed doors.

A member of this party, Avdullah Hoti, announced his candidacy for party chairman a few days ago, although some figures have said that only Abdixhiku's performance will be discussed on Saturday and that the issue of candidacies for party chairman is a separate process.

" We are not in the phase of other candidacies. We are in the phase of evaluating the work of the president, at his request, we will see what he offers to the Assembly. If resignation is offered, the resignation is a voluntary, individual, unaffordable, directly applicable and irreversible act. If a vote of confidence is requested, then it is a matter of voting, which should be done as a vote based on the LDK statute, secret ballot with a box and we move on. Each result will be respected by our side ," said Arben Gashi.

The Democratic League of Kosovo is one of the oldest parties in Kosovo, founded in 1989 by Ibrahim Rugova.

It played a key role in the period of peaceful resistance and in the building of the country's democratic institutions. / Taken from Radio Free Europe
