US-EU trade war/ Meloni: It must be avoided, no one benefits

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stressed that a trade war between Europe and the United States must be avoided, as it would harm both sides.

"I remain convinced that we must work to avoid in all possible ways a trade war from which no one would benefit, neither the United States nor Europe."

Meloni added, however, that her view does not exclude that, if necessary, measures should be taken to protect Italian products.

Her reaction comes in anticipation of the announcement of Donald Trump's plan for trade tariffs.

Meloni said that Italian food and agricultural products are widely exported to Europe and globally and the United States represents the second largest market, with exports up to 17% in 2024.

She said that imposing new tariffs would have serious consequences for Italian manufacturers, but would also be unfair to American citizens.

"I think it would also be unfair to many Americans because it would limit the ability to purchase our great products only to those who have the economic opportunity to spend more."
