Mass protests erupt again in Serbia
On Tuesday evening, the Serbian cities of Novi Sad and Belgrade were filled with protest rallies aimed at condemning the beating of students the day before, and against the destruction of a park to make way for an aquarium.
Large numbers of police forces with riot gear were deployed to manage the gatherings. In Belgrade, the evening protest joined the daytime one against the destruction of Usce Park, the largest green open space in New Belgrade. Police detained several people, checked their identification documents and ordered them to leave.
In Novi Sad, the protest rally against the beating of students began in a central square and marched towards the central police station, where protesters placed posters on its doors. The event the day before had taken place during a state ceremony attended by senior officials and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Supportive protests were also organized in Valjevo, where the local community showed solidarity with the beaten students in Novi Sad, and in Kraljevo, where demonstrators marched near the local headquarters of the ruling SNS party. In the southern city of Niš, protesters marched to the central police station to draw attention to the police's inaction during the violence against demonstrators.
The demonstrations mark a wave of civic anger against violence against students and the destruction of public green spaces in Serbia.
