After Romania's election is canceled, pro-Russian candidate Călin

Romania's pro-Russian presidential candidate, Călin Georgescu, has been escorted by police for questioning in connection with last November's controversial vote, a process in which he emerged victorious but was later annulled.

According to the Romanian news channel, prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for him and have begun searching the premises of his close associates, including mercenary leader Horațiu Potra and Georgescu's bodyguard.

Georgescu is reportedly being questioned about the financing of his election campaign last year.

Prosecutors suspect 27 people of acting against Romania's constitutional order.

According to the prosecution, they are accused of public incitement, initiating a fascist organization and making false statements regarding the sources of financing an election campaign, but the statement did not mention the name of Georgescu or his assistant.

However, shortly after news of the raids was released on Wednesday morning, Georgescu claimed that the searches were aimed at blocking his new presidential candidacy.

"Călin Georgescu was going to present his new candidacy for president. The police stopped him in traffic and escorted him to the General Prosecutor's Office for questioning. Where is democracy, where are the partners who should defend democracy," reads a post on Georgescu's Facebook account.

Romania was plunged into political chaos in late 2024 when Georgescu, a pro-Russian far-right and NATO skeptic, won the first round of presidential elections and was scheduled to face reformist Elena Lasconi in the second round.

The Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election after an investigation into suspicions that Russians had influenced the result.

New elections in Romania are scheduled to be held on May 4, while the runoff is scheduled two weeks later on May 18.
