"We are getting closer to the pact", US President: Either we will have

United States President Donald Trump has declared that Iran is "getting very close" to reaching a deal with Washington over the war, after Tehran also signaled progress was being made last week.

However, both sides have been cautious, and Iran's foreign ministry spokesman said the core issue of nuclear weapons would not be part of any proposal.

Speaking to the media, Trump said he had seen a draft of the deal with Iran. When asked if it was good enough, he said: “I don’t know, I can’t tell you that.” The president did not provide further details on the draft, but insisted that any deal would “absolutely” prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

"I will only sign an agreement where we get everything we want. Either we will have an agreement, or we will have a situation where one country will be hit very hard," he said.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told state television on Saturday that the positions of the US and Iran had been getting closer over the past week, but warned that this did not mean agreements would be reached on key issues and accused the Americans of "contradictory statements."

"Our plan has been to first draft a memorandum of understanding, or an agreement, in the form of a framework, consisting of 14 points," he said, adding that they were in the process of finalizing the memorandum, so further talks could take place within 30 to 60 days, where a final agreement could be reached.
