New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced tonight a temporary ban on movement in the megalopolis of eight million inhabitants, which is expected to be hit by a severe storm.

We are declaring a state of emergency and banning traffic from 9 p.m. until noon on Monday,” the mayor announced at a press conference. He explained that the city’s roads, highways and bridges would be closed to traffic, but “some urgent and necessary movements” would be allowed .

The city "has not experienced severe weather of this magnitude in ten years ," Mamdani warned, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Due to the expected extreme weather events, with snowfall and strong winds, all roads will be closed and traffic will be prohibited for all cars, trucks, motorcycles and electric bicycles, he explained.

Snowfall is expected to reach 45-60 cm, possibly even exceeding 70 in some areas.

Other cities in the eastern US, such as Boston, are also bracing for the coming severe weather. In late January, a severe winter storm that hit the area killed more than 100 people.
