US Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old who killed UnitedHealthcare insurance company CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4.

Mangione faces separate federal and state charges in Thompson's killing. The federal charges include murder by firearm, which carries the potential for the death penalty, according to the AP.

"The murder of Brian Thompson, an innocent man and father of two young children, by Luigi Mangione was premeditated and cold-blooded and shocked America," Pam Bondi said in a statement.

"After careful consideration, I have instructed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we implement President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and make America safe again ," she added.

According to prosecutors, Mangione had a notebook where he expressed his hostility towards the insurance industry and wealthy executives.

UnitedHealthcare is the largest health insurer in the US, and the company had announced that Mangione was never its customer.

The maximum sentence for the civil charges is life in prison. Mangione pleaded not guilty to the state's indictment.
