UAE official: It may take decades to restore trust between Iran and Arab

The most dangerous phase of the war with Iran could end quickly, even if the conflict itself drags on longer, a United Arab Emirates official said, warning that it could take decades to restore trust between Tehran and the Arab countries that have been targeted.

"At the end of the day, this war will end, and my assessment is that the risk will end sooner rather than later. But the official end of the war may take a little longer," the Emirati official said.

He added that relations between Iran and the Gulf Arab countries that have been targeted will eventually normalize, "because, at the end of the day, we are neighbors. But the war has created a huge trust deficit that, in my opinion, will last for decades."

The official also stressed that any negotiations for a new deal with Iran must take into account Tehran's missile program. "Their missiles are in the spotlight because they are no longer considered simply a means of self-defense."

The United Arab Emirates, as a regional business and tourism hub that relies heavily on foreign workers, is among the hardest-hit countries out of at least a dozen countries that have reported being targeted by Iran.

"What we saw was something we didn't expect. Time showed that we were prepared, but we certainly didn't expect it. We didn't believe that Iran would really jeopardize relations with all of its neighbors," the official said.

He added that France is helping to patrol airspace and neutralize missiles and drones, stressing that the country has been prepared for an emergency situation "for a long time" and has the necessary food reserves.
