"I got it in Albania"/ Albanian violinist caught with 1 million euros of cocaine, evidence revealed

A 45-year-old violinist has been remanded in custody in France after being stopped by customs officers at a motorway toll booth in La Turbie (Alpes-Maritimes) on August 10. He was carrying nearly 40 kg of cocaine, originating from Albania. His trial will take place on October 9.

A 45-year-old man was stopped at a motorway toll booth in La Turbie on August 10, 2026. During a check, authorities found 38.3 kg of cocaine in his vehicle, reports L'Est Républicain. A quantity that represents a value of more than one million euros.

A violinist by profession, the 45-year-old regularly participated with the Besançon (Doubs) orchestra, without being a permanent member of it.

The entire quantity of drugs seized was in his vehicle during the search conducted by Menton customs officers.

He was then placed in police custody for questioning, while a search was underway at his apartment in Doubs, ici Besançon reports.

Cash and weapons

There, investigators found 90,000 euros in cash, four category B and C weapons, as well as their ammunition, France 3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté reports.

Appearing before the Nice Criminal Court on Friday, August 14, the defendant explained that he had obtained the drugs in Albania.

He was supposed to receive 20,000 euros to complete the mission.

The man was remanded in custody after requesting additional time to prepare his defense.

He will be tried on October 9th.

Asked by L'Est Républicain, his colleagues in the orchestra describe him as a man well-liked by the collective, "very willing to help" and "kind."

A shock for the orchestra

However, the musical group does not want to be associated with this issue.

"If the facts are confirmed, we may regret that the reputation of the orchestra, which is the pride of our region, will be tarnished," said Jérôme Durain, president of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.

"This is about the action of a single individual, who should not be mixed up with the Victor Hugo orchestra. Justice will do its job and this man must answer for his actions," added the mayor of Besançon, Ludovic Fagaut.
