The hegemony of functional stupidity!

The hegemony of functional stupidity!

There is a quality that, with a little attention, you can clearly discern in our society, and it is called functional stupidity.

Functional stupidity does not mean that people are individually incompetent or stupid. It is something stranger and more structural. It has to do with actively cultivating an environment where deep thought, critical questioning, and true reflection are silently discouraged. Or to put it another way, an environment where thought is neither directly forbidden nor punished but simply not welcomed and appreciated. And paradoxically it works. Anyone who stops thinking but simply acts to make things move faster is the right person for President, Prime Minister, Party Leader, MP, Minister, University Rector, Director, etc. Functional stupidity does not announce itself. There is no written rule that says, "please stop using your brain at full capacity, because you are embarrassing others," rather in complete silence it functions through the tax of reflection. The tax of reflection is a constant and enduring cost borne by anyone who dares to delve deeper, even more so when they do so out loud.

To go deeper means to ask questions that no one dares to ask; it means to reject the narratives that are served; it means to live with uncertainty. Moreover, this process requires the courage to admit that you may be wrong. Anyone who thinks twice, asks too many questions and consequently slows things down, begins to be filed in the consciousness of the culture of functional stupidity as "difficult."

In societies where functional stupidity flourishes, not only is thought and reflection suppressed, but false signals of competence are easily spread. As critical thinking is pushed out of the system, it is replaced by the fluid and confident dissemination of ideas, thoughts, opinions, or debates that do not require much effort to be absorbed by the audience.

Look around you, at conference tables, at party meetings, at press conferences, at TV debates, at countless portals, at podcasts that have multiplied like mosquitoes in summer, and you will easily spot people who, the less they know, the more easily they speak. This is how they make themselves visible, hoping to register themselves in the collective consciousness as people with the necessary stuff of "leading intellectuals."

While operating under the hegemony of functional stupidity, in every large or small organism of this society, the leader or certain groups around him feel permanent even when there is a deep crisis.

I have not discerned anything charming, seductive, or irreplaceable in our leaders gifted in oratory and political opportunism; on the contrary, the leaders and the grotesque figures who surround them survive because they embody, feed the pathology of functional stupidity.

So the greatest division or difference of our time is no longer left versus right, but it is the missing choice versus the model offered. It is those who live with the consequences versus those who cause them. It is the people who pay the costs versus the people who create the costs. It is the citizen versus the "smart fool" who has taken over every political, administrative and social entity.

PS. I wanted to accompany this note with a photo of a worthy representative of functional stupidity, but there are so many that I would take revenge on anyone who could use it as an illustration!
