Two SP MPs visit former President Meta in his cell: Here's what I asked

Ilir Meta has reacted from detention, after the meeting he held at the "Jordan Misja" Penitentiary with Socialist Party MPs, Antoneta Dhima and Saimir Hasalla, who are members of the Parliamentary Committee for Civic Initiatives, Cooperation and Institutional Oversight.

In his reaction, Meta announced that during the meeting he presented his concerns to the deputies regarding the violations he claims occurred during the investigation, detention and judicial process against him.

One of the issues Meta has focused on is, according to him, the prevention of giving interviews to the media, despite permits issued by SPAK.

He also raised concerns about the conflict between the Special Court of First Instance and the National Chamber of Advocates, claiming that this clash has led to the blockage of around 600 court hearings.

Full post:

Today, at the "Jordan Misja" Penitentiary, I met with MPs Ms. Antoneta Dhima and Mr. Saimir Hasalla, members of the Parliamentary Committee for Civic Initiatives, Cooperation and Institutional Oversight, at their request.

I was presented with a clear exposition of the very serious legal violations that have accompanied the investigation, detention and judicial process against me, which have been repeatedly identified and confirmed by the Albanian Helsinki Committee.

I demanded the implementation of all recommendations of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, especially those related to guaranteeing freedom of expression, which has been deliberately denied to me for more than two years.

Despite the requests submitted and the permits issued by SPAK for journalists, I continue to be prevented from giving interviews to the media while in detention.

Precisely on this issue, in its recommendation dated May 25, 2026, the Albanian Helsinki Committee emphasized the need to guarantee this right and suggested that interviews be made possible through electronic means, including online platforms such as Zoom.

Failure to implement this recommendation proves the true intentions of this purely political detention and the violation of my rights beyond imagination.

The biggest concern, which I focused on, was the deliberate and clearly politically directed conflict between the First Instance Court of Appeals and the National Chamber of Advocates, which for at least two months has blocked around 600 court hearings, with very serious consequences that undermine regular legal processes and the effective protection of citizens involved in these processes.

I expressed deep regret for the indifferent attitude of the Albanian Parliament towards this situation, especially when even the only legal initiative undertaken by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Freedom Party, Mr. Tedi Blushi, on October 14, 2026, was rejected on October 22, 2026, to be included in the calendar of the Assembly's work.

Likewise, I shared my concern about the position of the President of the High Judicial Council, Mr. Ilir Rusi, during his public reporting on October 13, 2026 to the Parliamentary Committee on Civic Initiatives, Cooperation and Institutional Oversight, where he stated that he had no intention of taking institutional steps to end this conflict.

Such a stance by the Assembly and the Supreme Court of Justice seriously undermines public trust in justice and in institutions that have a constitutional duty to administer judicial processes.

European integration cannot be simply a politically declared objective. It requires real respect for fundamental rights and freedoms, institutional transparency, implementation of the standards of the European Convention on Human Rights, and an independent judiciary that functions in accordance with the law, without political interference and without multiple standards.
