Transferred to Fier detention center, Veliaj reacts: Police kidnapping, severely violates my rights

Criminal Decisions (IEVP) in Durrës to Fier detention. In a press statement dated October 28, 2026, Veliaj claims that the transfer is being carried out without being provided with the official act ordering it and without being informed of the legal reasons for the decision.

According to Veliaj, he and his lawyer have requested to see the documentation several times, but their requests have been rejected. The mayor describes the method of transfer as a “police kidnapping” and claims that his rights are being severely violated.

Veliaj declares that he did not consent to the transfer and opposes the way it is being carried out, describing it as lacking in transparency. He has publicly called on the Minister of Justice, the People's Advocate and the Albanian Helsinki Committee to intervene urgently to verify the reasons and causes of this transfer, which he describes as political.

Erion Veliaj's full statement:
Today, a group of Prison Police employees, sent by the General Directorate of Prisons, appeared at the Durrës Penitentiary Institution to transfer me to Fier prison.

Despite repeated requests, both from myself and my lawyer, to be familiar with the act ordering the transfer and the reasons justifying it, we have been refused access to this document.

A forced transfer, without informing me of the act and the legal reasons on which it is based, for me constitutes a police kidnapping and seriously violates my rights.

I did not consent to this transfer and I objected to the way it is being carried out, without transparency and without enabling me to effectively exercise my legal rights.
