Austrian newspaper 'Kurier': Protests do not stop, Albanians have been filling the squares of Albania for 100 days

Opponents of a luxury real estate project in a protected natural area in Albania have protested for the 100th consecutive day in downtown Tirana.
They held banners with inscriptions such as "Albania is not for sale!" and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who supports the project. The wave of protests is directed against the plan for the construction of parts of the Narta Lagoon, in the Vjosa River delta, by American investors.
The project is being led by a company owned by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. The aim is to build luxury hotels, villa complexes and entertainment venues in Zvërnec Bay and on Sazan Island.
Flamingo breeding areas are at risk
Environmentalists fear that the project could permanently damage the delicate ecosystem of the Vjosa Delta in the Adriatic. This includes, among other things, resting and breeding areas for flamingos, herons and other birds. Since many demonstrators constantly bring along homemade cardboard flamingo figures, the movement has been dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution” in the media.
While the protests initially drew thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of people, on Monday, the demonstration was estimated to have been between a few hundred and a thousand, according to a video broadcast. “Resilience is not measured by numbers, but by resistance,” one speaker shouted to the crowd.
No building permit yet
According to Albanian media research, no building permit has yet been issued for the construction of the resort. The responsible authority has so far only granted the investor permission to fence the land where it will be built in the future and to create access roads within the area.
In fact, the first works to fence off the area began at the end of April. On May 30, the first protest – still small in size – took place near the fence of the construction site in Zvërnec. The physical attack by security personnel of a private company on a demonstrator then triggered the wave of protests that continues to this day.
