U.S. diplomatic missions in Israel and the Middle East have issued a general security alert for American citizens in the region, due to rising tensions and fears of rapid escalation. According to the U.S. Embassy in Israel, Iran and its proxies, including the Houthis, who have attacked targets in Saudi Arabia, may target U.S. diplomatic missions, companies and institutions in the Middle East and around the world.
Citizens have been warned of possible flight disruptions and airspace closures in the region and have been urged to maintain a high level of vigilance, stock up on food and water, and download real-time warning apps.
As a result, US President Donald Trump has returned to the White House after leaving Camp David, Maryland, a day earlier than planned, according to several US media outlets. Trump's early return to the White House comes after a new security alert issued by the US State Department, which advised Americans in the Middle East to "maintain heightened vigilance" and prepare for possible travel disruptions in light of new attacks launched by the Iran-backed Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia. "This military conflict has the potential for rapid escalation," the US State Department said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthis said they attacked "sensitive" sites in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Saturday with missiles and drones, hours after flames and a large cloud of smoke were seen near the city's main airport.
Saudi Arabia had sent out alerts overnight warning of potential danger around Riyadh, amid an escalation of attacks by the Houthis in the kingdom.
The Houthis did not specify what they had targeted in Riyadh, but said they had also attacked an Aramco facility in the Red Sea city of Yanbu, a key Saudi oil export hub.
