Fredi Beleri "brags" about Golden Dawn MP and attacks Greek justice, withdraws statement after strong reactions from PASOK

New Democracy MEP Fredi Beleri has been at the center of political debate in Greece in recent hours.

The reason was a statement he made about Ilias Kasidiaris, the former Golden Dawn MP, who on September 15 was released from prison after serving part of a 13-year sentence and has announced his return to politics.

Top Channel's correspondent in Greece, Alexander Marku, reports that Beleri's statement was made on September 10 on ONE television, a few days before his release. Speaking about him, Beleri said, among other things, that Kasidiaris was "one of the few Greeks who served his sentence until the last day."

This phrase caused a reaction from the largest opposition party PASOK, which asked the government and New Democracy to clearly distance themselves from the MEP's statement.

After the reactions, Fredi Beleri returned with a public clarification, admitted that his formulation had been incorrect and corrected it by calling the formulation "inappropriate" and emphasizing that it has no connection with Ilias Kasidiaris and what he represents politically.

Beleri also accused PASOK of taking part of his statement out of context and said that his stance on democracy, institutions and the rule of law is clear.

The New Democracy MEP also recalled that his party was the one that, according to him, institutionally confronted Golden Dawn and brought the matter to justice, emphasizing that there can be no equivocation about his stance towards the organization.

Ilias Kasidiaris was one of the most prominent figures of Golden Dawn and was convicted as a leader in a criminal organization. Even during his years in prison, he maintained a strong political and social media presence, and after his release he has made it clear that he intends to return to the political scene.
