Italy abolishes vehicle tax for small and medium-sized cars and motorcycles

The Italian government has announced the abolition of vehicle tax for small and medium-sized cars and motorcycles, as part of efforts to reduce the tax burden on citizens.

"Today, in the Council of Ministers, we approved the abolition of the vehicle tax for small and medium-power cars, up to 80 kW, and for motorcycles, with the exemption from the tax that applies to one vehicle per citizen," announced Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the American social network X.

She reaffirmed that the government had chosen to convert part of the resources used so far to cope with high fuel prices "into a simple and structural measure", aimed mainly at those who frequently use cars and motorcycles in daily life.

"A concrete choice. We are abolishing one of the most unpopular taxes by Italians and continuing the path of reducing the tax burden. While others talk about wealth taxes, we are abolishing a property tax," she added.

News agency ANSA reported that the measure applies to all motorcycles and more than 70 percent of cars currently on the road, including a total of around 14.5 million vehicles.

According to the decree approved by the cabinet, the exemption from vehicle tax will include cars with a power of up to 80 kW, starting in 2027.
