This morning, the greatest Albanian writer, Ismail Kadare, who is known as the creator of many well-known Albanian works and not only, passed away.

"The General of the Dead Army", is a novel published in 1963 with which Ismail Kadare gained international fame, this novel dealt with the theme of an Italian general and a priest who come to Albania to collect the remains of fallen Italian soldiers in World War II. The follow-up novel, "Monster", was published in "Nëntori" magazine, but was banned.

At the beginning of 1970, the French publishing house "Albin Michel" published the novel "The General of the Dead Army" in French. It had a tremendous impact in France and was translated into almost 20 languages ​​within three years.

Five years ago, "The General of the Dead Army" was included in the list of the 100 best novels that the critics of the newspaper "Le Monde" have recorded since its creation in 1946. Kadare is ranked among the great writers of this century, as Kazanzaqis, Pasternak, Kundera, Solzhenitsyn, Aragon, Jursenar, Graham Greene, Salman Rushdie, etc.

In its content it is shown how about 20 years after the second world war when Europe was living the cold war, on one side of the bloc an Italian general is appointed with an equally difficult but also honest mission in search of the remains of Italian soldiers fallen in Albania during the Second World War. The governments had made an agreement, the general would cross within the border that isolated Albania. The general, accompanied by a priest, set off for Albania, a country they had heard of as wild from the relief and gloomy people. The journey of two strangers following maps, lists of names and excavations of soldiers who returned to the inhabitants and once the scars left by the war. Field with graves where Italians and Albanians were united. The general was looking for him, especially him, Colonel Z, who, unlike the others, brought down even more the general's pride that he had left because he knew that he was pulling back some lost ones. It was exactly the bones of Colonel Z, that faced the General with many challenges, physical exertion but also a psychological destruction that leads him to lose consciousness. This is as a result of the infamous deeds that the famous Colonel Kish left in this country. Neither fallen in war nor honestly buried. The colonel killed by the hands of a woman (old Kune) and buried by her hands on the threshold of the house. The damage he had done to that family was severe, he killed her husband and daughters. His remains never ended up with the family members who were looking for him, but were lost in the river.

This novel has been translated into English, Belarusian, French, German, Swedish and Turkish.
