Mbappé shakes up the Ballon d'Or race

Kylian Mbappé is gaining ground in the race for the Ballon d'Or, just hours before the prestigious award ceremony.

According to data from betting company Betfair, the French striker's chances of winning the trophy have increased by 407.8 percent in just a few days, going from 4.35 to 22.09 percent.

This increase has pushed the Real Madrid star into second place in the list of favourites, ahead of Lamine Yamali, whose chances have dropped to 12.05 per cent. However, Harry Kane remains the leading candidate, with a 49.10 per cent chance of winning the award.

The latest move has brought back memories of what happened in 2024, when Vinicius Junior was considered the favourite for the Ballon d'Or, but on the day of the ceremony it was reported that Rodri would be declared the winner. Real Madrid, after learning that the Brazilian would not win the award, cancelled their trip to Paris, while the Spanish midfielder eventually lifted the trophy.

This precedent has fueled speculation of a possible turnaround this year, with Mbappé returning to the spotlight. However, the increase in betting percentages is not confirmation that the Frenchman will be declared the winner, nor evidence of reliable leaks of information about the result.

Kane, on the other hand, remains the main favorite. The Englishman's candidacy is based on individual performances and successes with Bayern Munich, with whom he won the Bundesliga and the German Cup. However, the lack of major European or international trophies could affect the assessment of his candidacy.

The race remains open until the official announcement of the winner, while Mbappé's increased chances have added to the uncertainty in the final hours before the ceremony.
