A luxury resort for Trump's son-in-law in a protected river delta is turning into a major political conflict in Albania. The lagoon will decide how seriously Prime Minister Edi Rama takes nature protection, the rule of law and his country's European course.

Thousands of people are still protesting in Albania in front of Prime Minister Edi Rama's headquarters against deep-rooted corruption, the "selling of the country" to foreign investors, and an establishment that believes laws can be changed with money.
The cause of the protests is a giant construction project with a yacht marina and hotel complex in a protected natural area, where flamingos, pelicans and other animals breed and rest.
Albania must decide: a 1.4 billion euro, 10,000-bed luxury resort for Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in one of the last untouched river deltas in the Mediterranean – or EU membership.
Rama wants both.
Brussels would do well to make it clear and unequivocal: protecting nature and the rule of law are ultimately worth more than any hotel complex for the international luxury elite.
Whoever destroys the flamingo lagoon also destroys Albania's path to the EU.
It is unacceptable for the government of a country candidate for EU membership to deliberately change laws in favor of large investors.
Even more so when the impression is created that corruption is not being fought, but perhaps being favored.
The flamingo protests are a triple test for Albania's path to the EU.
Rama must resist the lure of billions.
The changes to the nature protection legislation should be withdrawn, and the law should be brought back into line with EU standards.
And the way demonstrators are treated will show whether Albania is mature from the point of view of a state of law to join the EU.
It's long since become a matter of just a few flamingos.
It is about the great dissatisfaction with the government, the authoritarian style of leadership, and decisions in favor of a small elite.
Many young Albanians already want to leave the country.
What Rama will put in the lagoon will shape the future of the country: luxury for a few or a future in the EU for all.
