"I don't have time to grow old," Dolly Parton's last words before her death

Dolly Parton, one of country music's biggest icons, spoke a few months before her death about how she viewed age, life and what she would leave behind.
The singer, who passed away at the age of 80 on August 25, had stated that she considered old age mainly a matter of mindset and that she had no intention of stopping working.
A few months before turning 80, Parton told PEOPLE magazine that she felt like she was "just getting started," despite her age. She explained that the secret to feeling young was to not pay attention to age.
" If you let yourself get old, you'll get old. I don't have time to get old. I don't have time to sit and think about it. It's not where my mind is ," she said in November, while promoting her autobiography.
Parton also began to think more about her legacy and what she wanted to leave behind. This inspired her to write her memoir, "Star of the Show, My Life on Stage."
" When you get to my age, you start thinking about what you need to do to close the circle. To make sure you leave behind what you want the world to know about yourself, from your mouth, from your heart ," she had said.
However, Parton has also spoken about how she wants to look in the future. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2020, she emphasized that she doesn't see life through numbers.
" I will be the best version of myself, no matter my age ," the singer declared.
With characteristic humor, she added that, if she lived to be 95, she would continue to use makeup and cosmetic procedures to look as young as possible.
"I'm going to look like a cartoon. I'm going to have makeup. I'm going to look as young as my plastic surgeons allow me to," Parton said, emphasizing that more important than appearance was what a person conveyed from the inside.
Despite her energy and focus on life, the singer had also thought about what comes after death. In 2025, after the death of her husband, Carl Dean, to whom she had been married for nearly 60 years, she said that she believed she would one day see him again.
In a 2019 episode of the podcast "Dolly Parton's America," Parton also spoke about her faith and the afterlife.
She had said she hoped to continue singing, writing songs and even playing the harp in heaven, humorously describing herself as part of the "band of angels".
" I don't think this is the end of me. I don't think this is the end of any of us ," Parton declared, adding that she believed that humans could continue to exist in other forms.
Her words, spoken months before her death, now take on a different meaning, especially her statement that she "had no time to grow old" and that she did not consider death to be the end.
