Before alarm clocks, people paid others

Before alarm clocks became part of everyday life, people used special ways to wake up on time, from rooster crowing to devices that worked with water, fire, and sound.

During the Industrial Revolution in Britain, there was even a special profession known as a knocker upper. These people were paid to wake up workers by knocking on their windows with long sticks or by shooting peas at the glass. Some would start work as early as 3:00 a.m. and not leave until customers answered.

In ancient China, candles marked with time intervals were used, which, when burned, would strike a nail in a metal container, creating alarm sounds. While in ancient Greece, the philosopher Plato is credited with adapting a water clock that produced a loud whistle.

Church bells also played an important role in organizing daily life. The profession of alarm clocks largely disappeared during the 1920s, when alarm clocks became more affordable.
