"High taxes for second homes", Edi Rama: New reference prices will be released within a few weeks

Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting with all the mayors of the country's municipalities this Friday. Rama was joined by Finance Minister Petrit Malaj, who announced that they are close to finalizing the new transparency awards.
Given that property values have increased by 26%, the minister added that their tax, like in other European countries, will need to have the same importance.
"We are close to finalizing the new reference prices. The value of properties has increased by 26%. Property tax is one of the main taxes in all municipalities in Europe and should have the same importance for the municipalities of our country. In parallel with the tax, we will also introduce the revaluation of properties, which will be carried out at a reduced tax rate.
"In addition to the new property value, citizens will have the opportunity to revalue their properties," said Malaj, while during his speech, Prime Minister Rama said that within a few days, new reference prices for real estate will be published, which will include for the first time a tax differentiation between the first and second home.
According to the Prime Minister, the tax on second homes, especially those in coastal areas, will be higher.
"In a matter of days, weeks, the new reference prices will be released. The new prices will have another element. The tax for the second home will be higher than for the first home. Municipalities, especially those on the coast, will have a significant income from this process.
Since many people on the coast have second homes. On the other hand, considering that reference prices increase significantly and make the property tax not small, which means that whoever manages the property tax well will have good income, one thing must be kept in mind.
In some municipalities we have excessive local taxes, which makes no sense. We have reduced the small business tax to zero, but in some municipalities the table tax, or the table tax... there are also extravagant cases of those who deal with mining being charged strange local taxes, but even here we must keep in mind that there is some kind of sense and meaning to it all.
"The Ministry of Finance will give us a guideline to keep in mind in conditions when, with the introduction of new reference prices, the property tax will increase and in conditions when, for the first time, we will introduce the concept of a second home. All those who have houses on the coast will have to pay more," said Rama.
