"We have worked hard and for a long time" - Rama from Brussels: We are

Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke shortly before the start of the Albania-EU intergovernmental conference in Brussels, saying that Albania has worked hard and long to be at this historic moment where it is today, and to continue further with the integration process.

"An important moment for membership. It is a moment for which we have been working very hard for a long time. It is a moment where half the work is done, if I may put it that way, where half of the open chapters will be closed and the other half that was closed will be opened," he said.

Asked about further EU enlargement, he said that he has always been of the opinion that the Union should expand further.

"I have actually been, I have mentioned them, I have been a champion of different approaches in the past because I have learned that the capacity to continue enlargement as has happened before is not there in the important capitals and on the other hand it is clear that if done properly it is the right thing, it must be conceived as it should be, it is not about an easy membership, but about a realpolitik union and a path to full membership," he said.

As for the issue of the EU veto on memberships or Albania's membership without the right of veto, he explained that Albanians are fanatics of the EU and cannot veto the Union.

"Albania is a country that has always been 100% in line with EU foreign policy, so we do not feel pleasure in having a veto, being the most pro-EU and Euro-Atlantic European country, we are EU fanatics, so EU fanatics cannot veto EU decisions," Rama concluded.

Today (May 26) the phase of closing the negotiation chapters begins. The Albania-EU intergovernmental conference in Brussels is related to the IBAR report and the launch of the closing phase of negotiations and group chapters for Albania.

In this way, Albania holds the second intergovernmental conference with the European Union for the "Foundations" chapter group, which is a step towards the important process for the full closure of negotiations by 2027, the deadline set by Brussels.

The intergovernmental conference follows the decision adopted by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States of the European Union (COREPER), which confirms the fulfillment of the Interim Conditions in the “Fundamentals” Chapter Group, and sets out the Conditions for the Closure of the negotiations for Chapter 23 “Judiciary and Fundamental Rights” and Chapter 24 “Justice, Freedom and Security”.
