Sali Berisha, the seal of the president and the great flag of May 23

By Rigels Seliman

The referendum of May 23, 2026 within the Democratic Party has produced exactly the predetermined scenario: Sali Berisha has officially solidified his power by keeping the seal, office and chair of the DP leader until 2030, based on the statute that guarantees him a 4-year mandate. The process called for his confirmation at the head of the largest opposition force began as a competition, but ended with only one name on the ballot. Without any real surprise, the party machinery announced the reconfirmation of Sali Berisha at the head of the Democratic Party with a bombastic figure of 95% of the votes, a result that in fact hides the failure of internal pluralism and the execution of the principles of free competition.

The aftermath of this process testifies to a brutal purge of any critical voice or alternative candidacy that could demand transparency and endanger the monopoly of the current president. The party bureaucracy shamelessly disqualified well-known names such as Ervin Salianji, Alesia Balliu and Evi Kokalari, not allowing even the militant doctor Mereme Sala to compete, who was penalized with the official argument that she had not held leadership positions before. In conditions where there was no rival facing him and the entire process was administered and counted exclusively by his "loyalists", the only real analysis remains the comparison of Sali Berisha with his own results in the past.

The cold art of numbers reveals that the Sali Berisha of 2026 has suffered a deep political defeat compared to the Sali Berisha of 2021. According to official data, in the referendum of May 23, 2026, 38,902 members voted out of a declared membership of 50,000 people, which means that the DP structures were supported by about 5,000 voters compared to December 18, 2021, where 43,680 members voted. The decline is equally dramatic in the preferential vote: in 2026, Berisha received the support of 37,341 members, suffering a loss of about 3,500 votes in favor compared to five years ago, when he was supported by 40,820 democrats.

This electoral failure of its kind comes at a paradoxical moment, when the leadership declares that the DP is in the "last mile" to overthrow the government of Edi Rama. Political logic dictated that the Berisha of 2026 should have inspired much more trust and mobilization among the membership than the one of 2021, when he returned in the midst of a "wild civil war among the democrats" to reclaim the office of Lulzim Basha. This referendum proved that the seal held with nails and the purge of rivals can guarantee the formal mandate until 2030, but it is shrinking day by day the legitimacy and numbers of a leader who is emptying the party from within.

Note: Official figures prove that despite the bombastic percentage of 95%, Berisha's fortress is no longer protected by trust, but is being emptied from within by the democrats themselves.
