Lawyer Plarent Ndreca has commented on the decision of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC), which rejected the request that Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj not remain in the cage during court hearings.

While speaking to News24 about his absence from the hearing, Ndreca emphasized that he was not present because he is not allowed to be with his lawyer and that this has nothing to do with the medical intervention that Veliaj underwent a few days ago.

Asked about Erion Veliaj's surgical intervention, Ndreca explained that it was a dermatological intervention.

Ndreca:  His absence is not related to the intervention, but his presence must be alongside his lawyer to carry out an effective, dynamic defense, as provided for by the European Convention on Human Rights. It cannot be treated with a restriction that limits him from conducting an effective defense.

It has also been made clear by other decisions that the glass cage is not the rule, it is the exception, when security measures impose presence inside the glass cage, but apparently, the glass cage is used to discriminate against the equal position referred to in the Constitution that a person under indictment who is innocent and presumed as such should have.

Ndreca:  It was an intervention related to his skin, so an intervention related to the skin, acne as we call it, because I don't know in medical terms. It's not dangerous.
