The recent floods in the country are not only a consequence of heavy rainfall, but also the result of human actions, said Prime Minister Edi Rama during a meeting with mayors in Golem.

According to him, the recent rainfall was very intense, but the situation was aggravated by the “appalling irresponsibility of many”, including the dumping of plastic on the streets that blocks drainage networks. “ What happens with plastic, it is dumped into the sea, it has irreparable damage to marine life, it has irreparable damage to the quality of our food. We must do our best to curb this horror of civic irresponsibility. This is an Albanian crime ,” he added.

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the establishment of a fleet dedicated to the maintenance and cleaning of drainage infrastructure, while commenting on the flooding situation.

Rama said that this fleet will be realized through a fund of 20 million euros that has been made available to our country by the United Arab Emirates. Rama said that this fleet can concentrate more forces somewhere where there is an emergency situation and municipalities will feel more prepared to face the emergency.

"Another element that affects is the level of resistance of the defensive infrastructure, canals, hydropower. It has increased significantly in the last 10 years, but the analysis made also by this emergency shows that there are points where resistance is weaker. For this reason, we must very precisely set the milestones to further strengthen the defensive infrastructure and, on the other hand, to address those aspects that have to do with strengthening the interaction between the ruling power and central institutions.

One of the things that Minister Demo has proposed and that has found our support is that with a fund provided by our friends in the United Arab Emirates of 20 million euros in support of rural development, we can purchase a significant amount of equipment to be placed at the service of drainage, cleaning the main drainage channels and to function according to the needs of the municipalities.

"This fleet can concentrate more forces somewhere where there is an emergency situation and municipalities will feel more prepared to deal with the emergency and on normal working days there will be an additional fleet for all municipalities according to the amount of canals to be cleaned and maintained, as needed to address the problem of embankments," said Rama.
