Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted to a BIRN media article, after receiving a statement from Prime Minister Rama regarding the arrest of Mayor Erion Veliaj. In the article titled 'Edi Rama: SPAK has gone off the rails, Veliaj will not be dismissed', the Prime Minister says that the press office's statement was taken out of context.

The Prime Minister, in a post on the 'X' platform, has published the entire response that the press office shared with BIRN media.

This above is the crazy world we live in. While this below is the press office's statement in response to Birn's question about whether Erjon Veliaj will be fired:

Apparently you did not follow the Prime Minister's address to the arrest of the mayor of Tirana, where we are in completely different conditions than all previous cases.

First, because we do not have a concrete corruption case for which there is an indictment, we are facing a voluminous novel about the excavations carried out in the life of him and his wife. So, in essence, we are facing a case that creates reasonable suspicion of an investigation outside the constitutional tracks and a detention in violation of democratic standards. But it is still too early to draw conclusions, so we reserve the right to take time.  

Second, the five-year stance of the Socialist Party and the Prime Minister not to make any comments on any specific case has changed with yesterday's dismissal of the mayor of the capital, to lock him up without trial in a cell and also locking his wife, the mother of a six-year-old son, in the house.

This extremely problematic fact for the entire capital, not just for the mayor as a party in the process, but also for us as guarantors of the Justice Reform and at the same time of contracts with citizens at the central and local levels, even more so for the metropolis of Albania, requires very serious reflection.

And finally, we would be very grateful to you and any media outlet that, instead of simply reading the detective novel of the indictment, would shed light on the evidence that supports or not the thread of those nearly 400 pages.

In conclusion, the answer is that not only will the mayor of Tirana not be dismissed from office, but his suspension has given rise to the duty for us to continue to be steadfast guarantors of justice, promoting as much transparency as possible to get to the truth. Whatever it may be.
