President Begaj decrees the date, local elections will be held on May 9, 2027

The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, decreed the date of May 9, 2027 for the holding of elections for local government bodies. According to the Electoral Code, elections must be held within the spring election period, which includes four Sundays between April 15 and May 15.

In the official announcement, the Presidency emphasizes that "for the purpose of setting the election date, the President of the Republic called for consultation all political factors represented in the Assembly of Albania and the State Election Commissioner as the representative of the body responsible for elections in Albania". "The Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, the Social Democratic Party and the State Election Commissioner responded to the call for consultation. Other entities preferred to stay away from the consultation, as they did not make public any party preference regarding the election date".

"The subjects involved in the consultation were open to any solution. The Commissioner suggested the date of 9 May 2027, the last day of the calendar, on the grounds that this date gives more time for implementing measures. The Social Democratic Party also prefers this date.

The date of May 9, 2027 is not linked to any reservation or prejudice for favoring certain parties or for potentially harmful influence on the free and uninfluenced will of the voters. Under these conditions, the President of the Republic gave legal force to the date of May 9, 2027.

On this occasion, the President of the Republic invites political entities to participate in the elections with alternatives, platforms and candidates at the height of this fundamental democratic process; the parties to develop a fair, dedicated and loyal competitive process, to consciously respect the legal framework and equality of arms, and to cooperate without reservations with the CEC for the development of an exemplary process and in accordance with the highest standards for a democratic society," the Presidency's announcement states.
