The European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has praised Albania's commitment to the European integration process, but stressed that the country must maintain focus on key reforms, especially the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and media freedom.

During his speech at the European Parliament, where he presented the EU enlargement package, Kos announced that Albania has already closed four negotiation chapters and intends to temporarily close other chapters, with the objective of completing membership negotiations by 2027.

The Commissioner's statements come at a time when Albania is facing protests against the government, where in addition to accusations of corruption and demands for political accountability, the functioning of institutions and the rule of law are also at the center of public debate.

In this context, Kos underlined that at the center of any reform effort should be respect for fundamental rights, protection of media freedom, and guaranteeing an independent judiciary.

She also highlighted environmental issues as another priority for Albania, emphasizing that these reforms are not only important for meeting membership criteria, but also for Albanian society and citizens.

The European Commissioner noted that the involvement of the entire society is essential for the success of the integration process, while emphasizing that EU enlargement aims to bring more peace, security and prosperity to the Union.

Marta Kos underlined that, although Albania has made progress in the negotiations, challenges related to reforms must be addressed to move towards the goal of membership.
