Scandal/Politico: Rama intends to use NATO against protests, Alliance diplomats warn
Edi Rama has used his minister, Ermal Nufi, to request help from NATO to combat Russian disinformation in Albania in the context of the protests that have erupted against him.
This is reported by the well-known media outlet, Politico.
But Politico points out that Rama's claims of Russian interference in campaigns fueling anger against his government are not supported by evidence.
Furthermore, NATO diplomats have warned that Albania should not resort to any reaction for domestic political reasons.
Below is part of the article:
Nufi said NATO should be “more active in identifying ways to counter malicious actors online, [by] establishing protocols within NATO countries and having response teams to assist any country in need.”
But this debate has become politicized in Albania, where Prime Minister Edi Rama has blamed Russia and Iran for inciting anti-corruption protests that have gripped the country since May.
Nufi said that over the past year in Tirana, an increase in social media campaigns that “feed hatred and anger” had been observed. He added that there are “organizations indirectly linked to Russia. We have seen their interactions on the internet.”
"NATO should look more closely at this issue," he said.
But communications expert and co-founder of the Tirana-based research organization SCiDEV, Blerjana Bino, said that while Albania has documented Russian-linked social media campaigns on other issues, there is no evidence to support Rama's claim.
"We see this government effort as a way to delegitimize the legitimate grievances of citizens," she said.
While sending a team would normally require consensus among NATO members, three NATO diplomats, who were granted anonymity to speak freely, said the allies would be open to considering the possibility. However, they cautioned that Albania should not resort to any reaction for domestic political reasons.
A NATO official, speaking on behalf of the organization, said the alliance “can provide further support when requested.” The official added: “Allies have increased efforts to prepare for, deter and protect against destabilizing actions, including by improving their cyber defenses.”
