Clement Turpin makes history: He is the referee who has given the most penalties

During the first leg of the play-off between Manchester City and Real Madrid, played yesterday at the Etihad Stadium and which ended 2-3, French referee Clement Turpin whistled a penalty in favor of the Sky Blues in the 77th minute for a foul in the area by Dani Ceballos on Phil Foden. A decision also confirmed by his assistants and VAR.

It was Turpin's 29th penalty in 53 Champions League matches, which puts the 42-year-old at the top of the standings ahead of German Felix Brych (49), who has taken 28 penalties in 69 matches in Europe's top competition.

The first penalty awarded by Turpin, reports the French press, dates back to November 4, 2014, during a spectacular draw between Arsenal and Anderlecht in the group stage (3-3): it was his second match on the most prestigious continental stage and he awarded two of them, one converted by Mikel Arteta and the other by Anthony Vanden.

After conceding five in his first four Champions League games, Turpin seemed to have lost his rhythm a bit, but has recently returned to his debut form, conceding five penalties in his last six straight games.
