FIFA rejects Iran's request, 2026 World Cup matches remain unchanged

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that FIFA has decided not to change the venues for the 2026 World Cup, rejecting Iran's request.

This request was made by the Iranian federation, which had requested that the group stage matches not be held in America, due to recent tensions in the Middle East.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum stressed that FIFA has decided to maintain the current calendar, arguing that any such change requires complicated logistical arrangements, difficult to carry out in the time remaining until the start of the tournament.

Earlier, FIFA had expressed reservations about Iran's request, especially considering that the Iranian national team is in Group G, along with Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.

Along the same lines, reports indicate that FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been determined to guarantee Iran's participation in the tournament, despite political tensions, emphasizing full compliance with the competition's regulations.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with America, Canada and Mexico as the host countries.
