Former teammate: I'm surprised by Amorim, from "clown" to coach at United

"He has been hailed as one of the most talented young coaches in football and has now been entrusted with the Manchester United job. But Ruben Amorim was once known more for his jokes than his tactics," says his former Benfica teammate Roderick Miranda, who admits he was surprised to see Amorim go from being a "clown" known for his dressing room jokes to managing a Premier League club.
Miranda told Flashscore Australia this week: "I never thought he would become a coach! Not because of his footballing ability or intelligence, but because he was the 'clown' of the dressing room. He had a very fun personality and was always doing something to make us laugh. When I heard he was starting a coaching career, I was a little surprised and asked myself: how can a guy I played with become so serious? But he was a very intelligent player. He could play in a few different positions, maybe that's why he's a great coach, because he has an incredible understanding of the game."
Miranda and Amorim grew up together in Benfica's academy and played together in the early 2000s. Amorim, now 40, had a distinguished career as a midfielder, playing at senior level for Belenenses, Benfica, Braga and Qatari club Al-Waqrah, as well as representing Portugal 14 times between 2010 and 2014. However, it is his role as a coach that has captivated European football. After ending Sporting's 19-year wait for a title, Amorim was appointed manager of Manchester United in November 2024.
