From Zhota to Bunjaku, the world of football has not avoided serious tragedies

Road and air accidents have left deep marks on the history of football, taking the premature lives of many footballers.
Such events have not only shocked clubs and fans, but have also left behind painful stories that continue to be remembered with regret. Most recently, Albanian football was hit by the tragic loss of the AF Elbasan striker, an event that brought to mind the numerous cases of footballers who have lost their lives in fatal accidents.
One of the biggest tragedies of recent years was that of Portuguese striker Diogo Zhota. Last summer, the Liverpool player lost his life along with his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in northern Spain while they were travelling to England. The news shocked the entire football world and caused numerous reactions from clubs, players and fans.
Last summer, Ethan McLeod also tragically lost his life. The 21-year-old footballer, who had played for clubs such as Wolves and Macclesfield, died after his vehicle crashed into a metal barrier near Northampton, England.
Meanwhile, just a few days ago, Greek football was engulfed in mourning after the passing of Mario Oikonomou. The 33-year-old, who played for AEK Athens, passed away in hospital after several days in critical condition. He had been hit by a vehicle while riding his motorbike.
Another famous name to tragically lose his life was José Antonio Reyes. The former Arsenal and Sevilla footballer passed away in 2019 after a serious road accident on the Utrera-Seville route in Spain. That same year, the football world was also shocked by the death of Emiliano Sala. The Argentine striker had signed for Cardiff City and was travelling from Nantes to Britain to join his new team when his Piper Malibu plane crashed over the English Channel due to bad weather.
All these stories prove that football, despite the emotions and glory it brings, has not been able to escape tragedies. The passing of the AF Elbasan striker adds to a long list of losses that have left a void on the green fields and in the hearts of fans.
