Meta plans ad-free subscription versions of Facebook and Instagram in the UK

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, is considering introducing a subscription service for these two platforms in Britain, in exchange for removing ads.

The BBC reports that under the plans, those who use social networking sites could be asked to pay for ad-free use if they do not want their data tracked.

This comes after the company agreed last week, after a protracted legal battle, to stop targeting ads to a British woman.

Meta is offering ad-free subscriptions to Facebook and Instagram in the EU starting in 2023, starting at €5.99 per month. Initially, the subscription was €9.99, but later the prices were reduced.

As Meta reported, the company is "cooperating constructively" with the British privacy watchdog regarding the subscription service.

Social media platforms like Meta rely heavily on advertising revenue. The company says personalized advertising allows its platforms to be free and reported that ads accounted for over 96% of its revenue.

On the other hand, some services, such as media services, require users to either pay or consent to tracking while using the platform for free. This is the model of the Daily Mail, the Independent or the Guardian. However, this model (“consent or pay”) could violate British data protection laws, activists say.
