For four years, Sali Berisha built his political narrative by attacking anyone who did not share his views. He waged a coup-like war to violently seize the DP headquarters, just as he did in '98 with the attack on the Prime Minister's Office, or like Edi Rama on January 21.
With the decision of Edi Rama and the decision of Belinda Balluku's sister-in-law, he managed to get the stamp of the DP, but lost the stamp of the Albanians.
And it is precisely the citizens who are sending a message that cannot be ignored. For the first time in such a visible way, the protest is not directed only against the government, but also against the figure of Sali Berisha. This is an unprecedented development in Albanian and world politics, where the largest opposition party is considered responsible just like the government.
For decades, Berisha has been the figure around whom the opposition electorate has mobilized. Today, a part of society sees him as part of the problem, not the solution.
Berisha's attempts to sell Albanians that he is changing are like that vagrant who hasn't washed for 4 years and who only paints his lips once and pretends to be clean.
In fact, nothing has changed. Berisha makes the decisions there, it doesn't matter who is there.
Why all this hatred on the boulevard?
In these 4 years, Berisha has shown Albanians that his concern is above all else, above the DP and Albania.
In these 4 years, the DP MPs have shown that they, for their seat, lick everything they spit. That is why trust in them is 0 today and attempts at selfies on the boulevard are ridiculous.
Today, the opposition's problem is no longer the seal, nor the logo, nor the headquarters. The problem is credibility.
Sali Berisha's collaboration with Edi Rama has made it incredible.
The benefit of construction permits and tenders, in which his son is a part, has made Albanians understand that Berisha's interest is personal and his "war" is a facade.
The fact that Sali Berisha stands by Edi Rama whenever he is in difficulty, as was the case with the approval of his name to go to the "peace board", or the support that Rama gave Berisha in the battle for the DP, shows that they are together and support each other.
That's why today the real opposition is in the streets and Berisha and the DP are seen as an extension of the government.
