At least nine people have died and several others have been injured in a fire that engulfed a hotel in Kolkata, India, overnight.
Local police confirmed the victims, while warning that the toll could rise further due to the number of people affected by the fire.
According to the Press Trust of India news agency, the fire broke out at around 1:45 a.m. in a hotel in the city center, near the West Bengal fire service headquarters.
About 80 people were evacuated from the building, while fire services managed to extinguish the flames.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of the fire, while work continues to identify the victims and fully assess the consequences.
