The Municipal Council of Lushnja removes the title of 'Honorary Citizen' from Gjergji Velos, Korreshi: The dignity of the persecuted has been restored

The Lushnja Municipal Council decided this Tuesday to remove the title of "Honorary Citizen" from Gjergji Velo, a title that was approved only two months ago, amid strong opposition from right-wing councilors and the Democratic Party.
The previous decision was made on the basis of incomplete information submitted by the Records Authority. After reviewing the issue and including it on the agenda, the City Council voted to remove the title with 23 votes in favor, 4 against and 8 abstentions.
Gjergji Velo held the position of chairman of the Lushnja Committee during the communist period and, according to the Democrats, signed decisions that characterize him as a persecutor of the regime's political opponents.
Following this decision, Democratic Party MP Saimir Korreshi reacted, describing the vote as a return of dignity for the persecuted and interned people of the city of Lushnja.
"The dignity of the persecuted and interned in the city of Lushnja was restored. Gjergji Velo was stripped of the title 'Honorary Citizen'. To respect the left-wing councilors who voted to strip comrade Velo of the title, giving a lesson to the Municipality as well," said Korreshi.
He also added that a public apology from the Municipality would be necessary, also requesting the removal of photos from the title award ceremony.
