A large quantity of weapons destined for Britain has been seized after police busted an arms-trafficking gang.

Glock rapid-fire pistols and a Kalashnikov rifle were among 25 firearms found in Albania, writes the daily The Sun.

The guns and hundreds of cartridges were earmarked for delivery to Albanian gangs in Britain, which are waging a turf war on drugs and prostitution in London.

Albanian State Police found the weapons being prepared for shipment when masked and armed police raided a property on the outskirts of the capital Tirana on Thursday (August 1st).

Albanian police working with the UK's National Crime Agency made five arrests as investigations continued after the weapons stash was discovered this week.

Arrest warrants were issued for three others still at large in the UK in connection with the gang. Three Albanians aged 21, 44 and 62 have been accused of international arms smuggling.

The National Crime Agency worked with the Special Prosecutor of Albania against Corruption and Organized Crime. Their investigation focused on the crime-ridden Tropoja region in northern Albania, the article says.

Since the late 1990s, gangs from Tropoja have been active in Albanian communities in the East and South East London boroughs of Woolwich, Stratford and Barking.

Mobsters involved in prostitution, cocaine smuggling and cannabis farms are suspected to increase their gun power to warn off rivals.

Ervin Karamuço, professor of criminology at the State University of Tirana, quoted by The Sun, said: “Criminal groups in Albania have created an arsenal of modern weapons and accessories to supply their associates in the United Kingdom. The weapons are secured in Turkey and on the Serbian illegal market and could have been used by anyone, including terrorists."

Last year, the same criminal gang was caught transporting Austrian-made Glock pistols capable of firing 20 bullets per second.

Six Glocks, a Broëning pistol and a Hel-Star pistol were hidden inside a van with UK license plates, along with more than 200 rounds of ammunition.

Officials at the Albanian port of Durrës found the weapons - en route to an address in Luton, using a scanner.

The van, a white Mercedes registered in Britain, was due to travel by ferry to the Italian port of Ancona from the UK.
