French President Emmanuel Macron held a meeting with business leaders, the central topic of which is the protection of the French economy from new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
Macron opened the meeting by calling the US president's decisions "brutal and unfounded", while expressing concern about the impact of the tariffs on France and beyond.
He has signaled that there will be a counter-response to this move.
He has also appealed for a coordinated EU response, stressing that it is important for Europe to stand united and react as a single bloc to Trump's policies.
In an effort to protect the French economy, Macron has suggested that French investments in the US will be halted until the situation is clarified and has called for the French sector not to be allowed to fall victim to these harmful tariffs.
On Thursday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also reacted strongly, criticizing the "unprecedented" US tariffs, calling them a return to "19th century protectionism."
Sanchez proposed a new package of 14.1 billion euros to support the economy in response to Trump's move.
He said Europe now faces a trade attack from the West, while in the East it must manage Russia's attack on Ukraine.
Canada has also imposed 25% counter-tariffs on vehicles from the US, in response to tariffs imposed by President Trump the day before.
