Caught transporting 5 illegal immigrants to Tirana, 23-year-old arrested in Gjirokastra

A 23-year-old man from Durrës has been arrested by the police as part of an operation against the trafficking of illegal immigrants. The operation codenamed “Tranzit”, conducted by the Crime Investigation specialists of the DVKM Gjirokastër in cooperation with the services of the Green Border Police Station in Kakavija, led to the arrest of the young man red-handed while transporting immigrants who intended to cross illegally towards the countries of the European Union.
According to the police, the citizen with the initials FD, 23 years old, resident of Durrës, was stopped at the place called "Glina Bridge", while he was transporting five immigrants in a Volkswagen vehicle, who intended to illegally cross the borders towards EU countries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the young man is suspected of transporting migrants for a fee, towards Tirana. During the operation, police seized the vehicle in which the transport was being carried out, as well as the arrested man's mobile phone, which will serve as material evidence in the investigation.
The operation was carried out following intensified controls and investigations to prevent and crack down on cases of the transportation of migrants from the MENA region, who are attempting to illegally enter the European Union.
The procedural materials have been referred to the Gjirokastra Prosecutor's Office for further legal action.
