US President Donald Trump has posted on his social media demanding that Australia grant asylum to the Iranian women's national football team after they were eliminated from the Asian Cup.

In a development today, five players are said to have left the training camp to seek refuge in the country.

Trump has intervened, writing: "Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iranian women's national football team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed."

"Don't do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give them ASYLUM. The US will take them if you don't want to," he wrote.
