Algeria extends death penalty for forest arsonists

Algeria's lower house of parliament voted on Thursday to extend the death penalty to forest arsonists, despite a moratorium on the measure called for by the country's president after deadly wildfires last summer. Media reports say the decision extends the death penalty to cases of violent child abductions, as authorities report a resurgence of such acts in recent years.
"The adoption of the death penalty for such acts is the appropriate legal response to eliminate these crimes," said Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjema.
In Algeria, the judiciary continues to impose the death penalty, particularly in cases of terrorism and intentional homicide, but has maintained a moratorium on its implementation since 1993. The change in legislation provides for the imposition of the death penalty for those found guilty of forest arson. Until now, these crimes carried sentences of 20 years and life imprisonment respectively, Lotfi Boudjema explained to lawmakers on Monday.
