Family Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş announced that psychosocial support teams have been deployed at the mine and at the hospital, where they are staying with the affected workers and their families. The event brings to mind the painful history of Soma, which in 2014 faced the worst mining disaster in Turkey's history.

On May 13, 2014, a fire in a coal mine in Soma killed 301 workers, most of whom died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The 2014 tragedy sparked protests across Turkey and brought the spotlight on working conditions and safety measures in mines. An expert report submitted to the prosecutor's office concluded that the disaster could have been prevented and highlighted serious shortcomings in measures to protect workers.
