Argentina threatens Britain with international lawsuit over Falkland Islands oil

Argentine President Javier Miel has threatened to take legal action against the United Kingdom if London does not stop oil exploration and production projects off the coast of the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.

In a reaction on social media, Milei has set a two-week deadline for the Sea Lion oil field project, a joint venture between British and Israeli companies, demanding that it be canceled.

The Argentine president stated that, if the request is not met within this deadline, he has instructed the Foreign Ministry and the country's legal teams to initiate international arbitration proceedings against the United Kingdom. Milley described the Sea Lion project as an illegal exploitation of Argentina's resources and warned that the case could be sent to the International Tribunal.

The new threat comes at a time when tensions between Buenos Aires and London over sovereignty over the islands have increased. Milley had also sharply criticized the United Nations during his speech to the General Assembly, accusing it of not taking action on the Falklands issue.

On the other hand, the companies involved in the project argue that their operations are based on valid licenses issued by the British authorities of the Falkland Islands. The Sea Lion oil field is located about 209 kilometers from the islands and is estimated to contain about 1.7 billion barrels of oil. The British companies Rockhopper Exploration and the Israeli companies Navitas Petroleum are expected to start extracting oil from the field within two years.

The issue is directly linked to the long-running conflict over sovereignty over the Falklands. In 1982, Argentine forces landed on the islands to reassert their territorial claim, sparking a 74-day war with Great Britain. A British task force drove Argentine forces from the islands, and the conflict cost the lives of 255 British servicemen, three islanders and 649 Argentine servicemen.

In a referendum held in 2013, the people of the Falkland Islands voted overwhelmingly to remain a British overseas territory. Some 99.8% of voters supported this status, while only three people voted against.
