Police in Albania clashed with protesters and prevented them from reaching parliament late Tuesday evening, in the latest protest against a luxury construction project linked to Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law.
Protesters marched after parliament resumed work after a summer recess and as demonstrations marked their 100th day. They clashed with police cordons in the center of the Albanian capital, Tirana, throwing eggs and tomatoes at riot police.
Dubbed the “flamingo revolution” because of protesters’ banners depicting the pink bird that could be damaged by the project, anti-government protests have rocked Albania. They aim to stop a massive coastal development project that critics say would cause environmental damage and limit public access to the coast.
Protests take place every evening in the Albanian capital. Initially, they focused solely on the construction project, but have since grown into a major challenge to the socialist government that has governed the country for so long.
Prime Minister Edi Rama – one of the targets of the protests – strongly supports the investment project, arguing that it would help modernize a country that spent decades in communist isolation.
Demonstrators chanted "Arrest Rama!" during the clashes, as police escorted MPs to and from the parliament building.
Several protesters were detained, but it was not immediately clear whether any arrests had been made.
