BILD echoes yesterday's siege of Parliament by Protest: Albanians demand the handcuffing of Rama and Kasta

There have been clashes between protesters and police in Albania. The cause of the protests is a billion-dollar project by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, who is married to Ivanka Trump. Police prevented the crowd from advancing towards parliament on Tuesday evening. Protesters threw eggs and tomatoes at officers and demanded the arrest of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Police had to protect MPs on their way to and from parliament. Several protesters were detained. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had been arrested. The protests are against a real estate project on the Adriatic coast, in which a company owned by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, is involved.

The project is expected to damage the environment

Critics say the project will damage the environment and limit public access to the sea. Protesters' banners depict a pink flamingo, which could be endangered by the project. This has given the protests the nickname “Flamingo Revolution.” The protests have now lasted more than 100 days.

Initially, the protests were about environmental issues related to the construction project, but they have since been directed generally against political problems and against Prime Minister Rama, who openly supports the construction project.

Demonstrators demand a better future

“We are here because we want change,” said demonstrator Elidon Mehmetaj. “Life is getting harder and harder and the government is not listening. We believe that Albania can do better. We want a better future.”

The luxury project consists of two parts: a small resort on the island of Sazan, a former uninhabited military base from the communist era, and a construction zone on a coastal area near the Narta Lagoon, which is currently under natural protection and is home to wetland species such as flamingos.

The project includes hotels, apartments, villas and a marina for yachts.
